  • NEW MEXICO: Day of Adaptive Kayaking (June 22), Deadline June 1

Kayak New Mexico is seeking 6 students for National Adaptive Kayaking Instructor Training program, to be held in Albuquerque on Sunday, June 22. Certified Instructor candidates will work with you, the applicant, to adapt the equipment and teach the American Canoe Association's Level 1 "Introduction to Kayaking" curriculum to people with a physical disability. Ideal candidates would have experienced a stroke, spinal cord injury or amputation. The purpose of this course is bring national certifications to local instructors, so we can grow our adaptive kayaking programs here in New Mexico.

The cost for the event is $0 - $150 based on need and ability to pay (actual cost is $480, but through donations, grants and scholarships, we are able to lower the cost to $150/student). ADDITIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THOSE WHO APPLY! This includes ~$1200 in equipment for the day, adaptive equipment kits (foam kits, air bags, etc), facility rental, and more. At the end of the class, the adaptive equipment is yours to keep. You will also be invited to join our kayaking community for local community outings after completion of the course.

The deadline to apply is June 1, 2014. Email Kelly@kayaknewmexico.org (preferred method of contact) or Call Kelly Gossett at 505-803-2201

We invite EVERYONE to apply, regardless of the dates of this course, so we can off you additional programs in the future. "Come as You Are!" at Kayak New Mexico, Inc.

Thanks to a generous donation, ActiveMSers is offering a scholarship to a New Mexico MSer who would like to attend this special day. Just let organizer Kelly Gossett know that you are part of ActiveMSers and he'll set you up!

I just got off the phone with Kelly, and he has agreed to switch it to a pool class indoors (a big pool: 75 feet by 75 yards)! Los Altos, with air conditioning. He has the pool reserved from 4 pm to 8 pm, so no early morning stuff either. I should be there with Laura. Caregivers are welcome to participate.
