  • NEW MEXICO: Adaptive Programs and Events

    There are so many I'm just gonna cut and paste. I think most of these are open to non veterans. -D

    *Pickleball

    Wednesday, July 18, 2-4pm

    Adaptive Pickleball happens in the Recreation Hall the usually the first Wednesday of every month 2-4pm. It also happens Tuesday/Thursday 9:15-11:00am and Saturday 12:30-2:50pm at Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center, 501 Elizabeth St. SE. Pickleball is a sport sweeping the country. It is tennis, badminton, and table tennis all in one. For questions or more information contact Ray Padilla 505-271-4557 or rpadilla503272@comcast.net.



    *Boccia Ball Training

    Thursdays, July 5, 19, 2-4 pm all athletes

    We will be hosting a Boccia ball practice/drop in sessions. This will be based in the Recreation Hall. Please contact Cat Ivie for more information catherine.ivie@va.gov.



    *Shuffleboard Training

    Thursdays, July 12, 26, 2-4pm all athletes

    We will be hosting a shuffleboard practice sessions. This will be based in the Recreation Hall. Please contact Cat Ivie for more information catherine.ivie@va.gov.



    *9 Ball

    Sunday, July 8, 1-2:30pm

    We will be hosting a 9 ball practice sessions. This will be based in the Recreation Hall. Please contact Cat Ivie for more information catherine.ivie@va.gov. Practice can also be done any time the recreation hall does not have formal activities happening throughout the week.



    *Table Tennis Training

    *Air Rifle

    This is an opportunity to practice your skills and a certified instructor will be available for instruction. Must RSVP to specific time as space is limited! You may only attend 1 training session on the same day.

    If you are interested email Cat Ivie, Catherine.Ivie@va.gov. If you want to attend, an Adaptive Sport Consult or written signed note from your PCP giving you clearance once to participate must be signed by your doctor with a clear statement clearing you to participate in air rifle.



    *Horseshoes

    Monday, July 2, 23, 2018 1:30-2:30pm, Parade Grounds VA Campus (inside track)

    Practice for horseshoes for the Golden Age Games at newly build horseshoe pits in the parade grounds. Practice can also be done any time the recreation hall is open throughout the week by checking out horseshoes.

    Bicycling Community Picnic

    Sunday, July 15 12:30pm Meet at Tingley Beach dirt lot

    BikeABQ is having a Bicycling Community Picnic at Bike in Coffee. The VA will be having a group meet at Tingley Beach and ride to and from bike in coffee all cyclist welcome to join. VA recumbents available to use on first come first serve reservation. RSVP required. Please RSVP by July 5 to Catherine.ivie@va.gov



    Art

    Mondays starting June 11, 2-4pm Instructor led

    Tuesdays, 2:30-4 pm Instructor led

    Wednesdays, 11:30-12:30pm open art

    Feldenkrais Method “Awareness through Movement”

    Suspended until recreation hall reopens Fridays

    The Feldenkrais Method is an educational system that uses movement to teach self awareness and improve your everyday function.     Bosque Off-Road Biking

    Monday, July 9, Aug 13 9:30-11:30am, Second Monday of each month

    National Hispanic Cultural Center 1701 4th St SW (side of lot by Bosque Trail)

    Join us in experiencing the Albuquerque Bosque on two wheels. Try mountain biking through the heart of the city, with these 3-6 mile group rides. Bring water and dress appropriately for the weather. Helmets and mountain bikes will be available but please pre-register so we have them available. The June, Sept, Dec group will be for all abilities and bikes as we will be riding gravel and crusher fine paths. July, Aug, Oct., and Nov. rides will be single track rides with longer distances.     ASPNM Disabled Veterans Watersports Camps

    August 3-5, 2018 Ute Lake (Please note if you are competing in the GAG you cannot attend this event)

    Come and join us for a three-day event at Ute Lake State Park with activities including Sailing, Kayaking, Stand Up Paddleboard, Waterskiing and Wakeboarding, Windsurfing, and Fishing. Arrive on Friday August 3rd. Camp Friday and Saturday. Watersports take place Saturday and Sunday. Depart Sunday afternoon. This is a free event to any Disabled Veteran. $50 fee for family members who want to join in on the watersports. Camping and Meals Included in Price.

    Warriors on Cataract Rafting Trip

    Moab, UT September 19-24, 2018

    This year's All Female Warriors on Cataract whitewater trip for disabled veterans and TAPS will launch on September 20. Licensed Commercial Outfitter Sheri Griffith River Expeditions www.griffithexp.com will conduct the trip from Moab to Lake Powell on the Colorado River through Canyonlands National Park. We cover all expenses once you get to Moab.

    You will need to be in Moab the afternoon of September 19 at the motel to get briefed, issued gear, fed, and put up for the night. This is a 4 night 5-day trip.

    Attached is information on the trip, and a Risk Form and a Confidential Information Spreadsheet that are to be completed and sent back to me, before the end of July. The Confidential Information Spreadsheet is to ensure we are accommodating any and all special dietary and other needs.

    Know that we can accommodate most any disability: wheel chairs, MST, certified service dogs (NPS does not allow comfort dogs), multiple amputees, severe PTS, TBI, and blindness. The more disabled, the more we'd like to have you on board.

    Fridays, 6:15pm on ice at 6:45pm Outpost Arena 9530 Tramway Blvd NE

    The New Mexico Blade Runners have Sled hockey practice at the Outpost Arena and has sleds to borrow for folks who want to try it out. Please plan to be there by 6:15PM so you have enough time to get ready and be on the ice by 6:45PM. For more information please contact Thomas East at tdeast4@gmail.com.



    Wheelchair Basketball

    Mondays 6pm, Mesa Verde Community Center, 7900 Marquette Ave NE. The Conquistadores have wheelchair basketball on Mondays at 6pm at Mesa Verde Community Center and on Saturdays at noon at different gyms. They do have extra chairs but are on a first-come first-serve basis but everybody's willing to share. If interested contact Sebastian Rael at spuds@nmwheelchairsports.com or call the team at 750-GOAL.



    Adaptive Swimming Lessons

    The JCC offers adaptive lessons modified for individuals with special needs. This class provides swimmers the opportunity to facilitate gross and fine motor skills in a gravity eliminated environment. This class will include skills such as safe entry and exit of the water, submersion, floating, and swimming technique. All Abilities Welcome! The Cost is 5 classes for $50.00 Classes are held in a temperature controlled therapy pool

    The next adaptive cycling and paddle sport clinic with Adaptive Adventures will be held October 10-12, 2018. The first day will be spent cycling at the VA campus the other 2 days cycling on the Bosque Trail in the community. If you are interested in attending or volunteering please contact Cat Ivie x2030 for more information. We would love to have our veterans who already have cycles to join us as mentors to our new veterans.

      Ski Santa Fe, Fridays, February 8, 22, March 1 ,2019

      OTHER PROGRAMS IN THE COMMUNITY

      WOMEN’S 3-ON-3 BASKETBALL

      Women Veterans, 55 or older, are invited to play basketball that will compete in the various local tournaments. We are also looking for a coach, (veteran or non-veteran). This team will practice for competition in both the National Senior Olympics and National Veterans Golden Age Games. Support of registration and team jerseys welcome. There is no association with Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center or any other VA affiliation.

      Rio Rancho Road Runners was formed in October 2016 to promote wheelchair basketball. We are accepting player entry registrations for three on three wheelchair basketball tournaments at the McDermott Athletic Center and there are no eligibility restrictions other than being over the age of thirteen. We have sports chairs available at all of our program events that may be used by participants.         Join us in experiencing the Albuquerque Bosque on two wheels. Try mountain biking through the heart of the city, with these 3-6 mile group rides. Bring water and dress appropriately for the weather. Helmets and mountain bikes will be available but please pre-register so we have them available. The Feb, May, Aug, Nov. group will be for all abilities and bikes as we will be riding gravel and crusher fine paths. Sept, Oct., and Nov. rides will be single track rides with longer distances.         WOMEN’S 3-ON-3 BASKETBALL

        Women Veterans, 55 or older, are invited to play basketball that will compete in the various local tournaments. We are also looking for a coach, (veteran or non-veteran). This team will practice for competition in both the National Senior Olympics and National Veterans Golden Age Games. Support of registration and team jerseys welcome. There is no association with Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center or any other VA affiliation.

        Rio Rancho Road Runners was formed in October 2016 to promote wheelchair basketball. We are accepting player entry registrations for three on three wheelchair basketball tournaments at the McDermott Athletic Center and there are no eligibility restrictions other than being over the age of thirteen. We have sports chairs available at all of our program events that may be used by participants.         The JCC offers adaptive lessons modified for individuals with special needs. This class provides swimmers the opportunity to facilitate gross and fine motor skills in a gravity eliminated environment. This class will include skills such as safe entry and exit of the water, submersion, floating, and swimming technique. All Abilities Welcome! The Cost is 5 classes for $50.00 Classes are held in a temperature controlled therapy pool

          All Bikes Rides on the Bosque

          Mondays-4/15, 5/20, 6/17, Meet 9:15am Tingley Beach dirt lot North of ponds

          Join us in experiencing the Albuquerque Bosque on two or three wheels. Riders of all abilities encouraged to join us. Please bring your own bike but if you need one (2 wheel, recumbent, or handcycle) reservations required. Bring water, snacks, and dress appropriately for the weather.           Adaptive Pickleball happens in the Recreation Hall is usually the first Wednesday of every month 2-4pm. It also happens Tuesday/Thursday 9:15-11:00am and Saturday 12:30-2:50pm at Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center, 501 Elizabeth St. SE. Pickleball is a sport sweeping the country.
