  • Perspective on the risk of HSCT

I was watching the news the other night and there was talk about the risks astronauts face on the job, considered the most dangerous job in the world (twice as dangerous as high altitude mountaineering and 60 time more dangerous than logging). Mark Kelly said the odds of dying on his upcoming space shuttle mission, according to NASA, is 1 in 57.

For perspective, the consent form I signed for HSCT listed odds as high as 1 in 20. Now I wouldn't say I'm anywhere close to three times as brave as an astronaut. (Maybe three times as desperate?) But fortunately the true risk for HSCT is closer to 1 in 100, and the risk keeps dropping. And that's key for it to be a mainstream MS treatment in the future....
