Fellow ActiveMSer Duncan is a putting the serious screws to his able-bodied UK compatriots in this fundraising challenge! Way to go, Dunc! - Dave
On Saturday 23rd June 2012 a ten peak challenge will be completed in ten hours, in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society.
Money raised will go towards vital MS research to find a cure for the most common neurological condition affecting young adults.
This years’ event promises to be even bigger than last year, when an outstanding £24,000 was raised. Duncan, who has MS, managed to swim across ten lakes whilst 120 participants walked 10 peaks following the Buttermere Skyline.
This year the father-of-three plans on rowing up and down Bassenthwaite Lake for ten hours while 150 fundraisers climb the ten peaks, as a challenge for charity, not competition.
Commencing at 7 am from the Swinside Inn in the Newlands Valley the first peak will be Causey Pike followed by Sail, Crag Hill, Wandope, Whiteless Pike, High Snockrigg, Robinson, Dale Head, High Spy and Maiden Moor. Locals have already begun their training and are getting in shape in order to complete the challenge.
Duncan’s wife Yvonne, who is organising the event, said:
“We were overwhelmed with the support we received last year, and hope this year will be even more successful. It’s great to see everyone pull together for a great cause that’s close to our hearts.
“When we’re struggling up the ten peaks we know Duncan will be having a tough time on the lake, but we’ll all just have to think positive and get through it. It will be an emotional day but so worth it. The MS Society is funding some exciting research projects, giving us all hope for the future.”
Local primary school teacher at St Herbert’s School, Duncan was diagnosed with MS in June 2010. Since his diagnosis his balance has been affected and climbing and enjoying the mountains has had to be swapped for the more aquatic pursuits of open water swimming and sculling. On taking a dip in a local lake he noticed that cold water could have quite a positive effect on the feeling in his legs. He got equipped with a wetsuit and goggles and began swimming daily in the local lakes.
After the event Duncan will be celebrating with a pint at the Swinside Inn and hopes all the participants of the 10 in10 will join him in celebrating their success.
