I was reviewing my treatment bill and a few things stood out, like the $1,620 per day for the room and the charges for every single little item. Multi vitamin? $1.50. Tylenol? $2. But it was the price of melphalan, the chief ingredient in mustard gas and the "M" in the BEAM chemotherapy treatment, that was heart-attack inducing. A one hour infusion—during which I had to chew on ice chips non stop to prevent mouth sores—cost $30,500! That's over $500 a minute to get a deadly drug. Okay, maybe I shouldn't look at itemized bills anymore....
