  • ARTICLE: Ultramarathoner, 52, with multiple sclerosis keeps on running for causes

HIDDEN HILLS >> Shannon Farar-Griefer started running marathons at age 35 and her first of five 135-mile Badwater Ultramarathons from Death Valley to Mount Whitney — billed as the toughest race in the world — five years later.

The former fitness model has pounded the pavement to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for ill and autistic children, fueled by inspiration she’s gotten from their often daunting struggles.

The 52-year-old entrepreneur plans to run the Los Angeles Marathon on Sunday. But after that she’s training for another 135-mile run in April from Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve to Barstow to raise funds for multiple sclerosis research. Farar-Griefer — who was diagnosed herself with the chronic disease nine years ago — was awarded a prestigious running partnership from MS Run the US to take on the first leg of the annual 3,100-mile relay from L.A. to New York. She hopes to run it in about two days.
