Neuro in ABQ/NM?
Hi New Mexicans,

I'm currently looking for a GOOD local neurologist - one who specializes in MS. Also, must be willing to not "push" me (or push a certain drug on me), but is open-minded and well-versed in the new developments, meds, etc. Does such a person exist? ;)

Thoughts or experiences, anyone?

Thanks very much!!

Good question, Kirsten, and not an easy answer. Many of the best neuros in town are retired or going to be retired and are not accepting new patients. Dr. Barrett I believe still accepts new patients and is a good listener from what I hear.

Thank you, Dave. :)

That's a rough one. I see Dr. Elaine Edmonds at UNM. I love her. She is no longer accepting new patients. I know Dr. Ford is in the same clinic, but I heard he's more interested in research than people... I opted not to go with him.
Maybe you can call her office and find out who she's recommending.

Edmonds is great and smart, and I really like her as a neuro. No bull with her. And she really cares about her patients. So much so that if you try to go off therapy on her watch, do not be surprised to get a bon voyage from Elaine. Her opinion: if you aren't going to try, why should she. Fair enough IMO.

Dr. Ford is my neuro. He's not as warm and fuzzy as Dr. Edmonds, but he is whip smart and is the state's leading MS guru. I get along with him quite well, but I've heard others frustrated with his matter-of-fact bedside manner. And yup, he's a researcher, and encourages his patients to participate. Without research, there will never be a cure, so again, fair enough IMO.

Let us know who you end up going with Kirsten and how it shakes out. Good luck!
