  • NM: ActiveMSers E-Newsletter FEB 2012

If you live in New Mexico, ActiveMSers has a NM-only newsletter that comes out when big events are happening locally. To subscribe, write me at dave@activemsers.org. The current edition is below (sorry, some links do not work). - Dave

    ActiveMSers New Mexico UPDATES

Once again, there is a cavalcade of events in the Land of Enchantment coming up in the next few months, so you better get out the Sharpie and mark up that calendar. Oh wait, it’s 2012, duh. So put reminders into your smart phone, Google Calendar, or reprogram your brain implant by turning your left ear counterclockwise. My mistake, that last one is still in beta testing and not yet available to the public, sigh.

Palo Duro MS Support Group (FEB 13)
This Monday, Feb. 13th, is the 2nd Monday of the month and time for the regular Palo Duro MS support group meeting from 2 to 4 pm. (Palo Duro Senior Center, 5221 Palo Duro Ave NE). They plan to have a speaker who will show a film and will also celebrate St. Valentine’s Day. Contact Group Leader Patricia Miller at 505-238-9175 or pjm1st@yahoo.com for meeting information.

West Side MS Support Group (FEB 16)
The new West Side MS support group is growing fast. Their next meeting is Thursday Feb 16, from 11 am to 1 pm at the Rio Rancho Church of Christ (1006 22nd St SE). The church is basically off Southern just east of Unser. The topic this month will highlight excellent web resources including www.ActiveMSers.org, and for those interested, folks will be going out for lunch afterward. (While I’ll miss this gathering, I hope to make future ones.) Meetings are scheduled on the third Thursday of each month and offer emotional support and MS education. For more details, contact the group leader: Tina, 505-896-6728 or tmillikan1@att.net.

Newly Diagnosed Support Group (FEB 16)
Were you diagnosed in the last three years? Then this monthly group is for you! Feel free to bring your lunch or just join the gang for emotional support and MS education. The group meets on the third Thursday of each month from 1-2:30 pm at the North Domingo Baca Center, 7521 Carmel Ave NE, ABQ, NM 87109. Questions: Michele, group leader, 505-821-1099, or Jessica, co-leader, 505-710-3237.

Free Aquatic Exercise Program (FEB 21-APR 26)
Join fellow MSers for a low intensity workout sponsored by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society that will help get you moving. Taught by a fitness specialist who is knowledgeable of MS, the Aquatic Exercise Program is designed to increase activity level, facilitate independent mobility and provide a support system for people living with MS. The classes are held in an 83 degree pool with a movable floor. The pool features a wheelchair lift for easy access. All exercises can be modified to suit each participants needs. Participants who require minimal assistance will need to have help from a self-appointed volunteer before, during and after the exercise session. REGISTER for this FREE program. 1-800-344-4867, option 1. The 12-week class—you don’t have to attend every class, but it is recommended to get maximum therapeutic benefit—is Tuesdays & Thursdays (2/21-4/26) from 10-11 a.m. at the West Mesa Aquatic Center (6705 Fortuna Rd., NW, Albuquerque, NM 87121). For those who prefer staying on the East Side for pool time at Del Norte, here is a link to that program led by NMSS volunteers Patricia and Hope: Del Norte Aquatics.
