CALGARY- A groundbreaking procedure out of Ottawa is providing new hope for those who suffer from the devastating effects of multiple sclerosis.
Autologous bone marrow transplants are done by retrieving cells from a patient’s own bone marrow. Researchers out of the Ottawa Hospital have been conducting trials since 2000, with incredible results.
“I look back now and I think, wow, I was a lot sicker than I thought I was,” says Karen Malcolm, who suffered from an aggressive form of MS. She thought she had run out of options, until she heard about the trial.
The original study involved 32 patients, and 24—including Malcolm—were given transplants. By accident, doctors discovered that when patients underwent transplants as a treatment for leukemia, their MS symptoms also improved.
