  • Airport adventures that weren't adventures

Flying to Houston I did all the things I usually do when taking a plane: get a wheelchair to the gate and get a wheelchair from the gate. But flying back was different. I didn't have to save my legs, so I figured what the heck. Why not get to the gate on my own with my forearm crutches?

Of course this decision also meant going through security, standing in line, and trudging through the Hobby airport (thankfully it's not too big). And it was no problem. I even walked onto the moving sidewalks successfully ... and walked off (half the battle).

When we got off the plane in Albuquerque a wheelchair was waiting for me, but I waved the dude away. Of course our gate was at the far end of the terminal, but my legs still had plenty of gas to get to baggage claim.

I haven't strolled through an airport on my own since 2009. It felt darn good. That said, I'll still take a W/C if I'm heading out on vacation to conserve every step....
