  • One reason TO get HSCT

Stella's story says it all. Diagnosed in 2007 at the age of 34. Monthly relapses on Avonex. Five relapses on Tysabri in 18 months. She and her doctors in the UK were getting desperate and they ultimately decided on a haematopoietic stem cell transplant. Insurance made a rare exception in her case and she starts the process at the end of June. She is blogging about it on the Multiple Sclerosis Resource Centre (MSRC) website.

I was reading over Stella's steps and while she doesn't have it quite accurate (stem cell collection doesn't require hospitalization for example) she's got a pretty good description. And her aggressive MS is exactly the kind of case that warrants the risks of an SCT.

      Hospital standards vs another

Stella description is of the UK standards, they hospitalize when thier standards require it for BEAM. Her Hematologist is the 2nd in the world that performed mobilization via PBSC.

The UK does not have insurance....it is called the NHS....the third largest employer in the world...behind the russian and chinesse army......free health care is a blessing
