  • Tricks for getting on and off a handcycle

I got this question the other day that I thought I would share with everyone.

Quick question ..what do you find is the easiest way to get in/out of your Handcycle? I have a Invacare Force 3 which is a great Handcycle but I have a little challenge going from my wheel chair to my Handcycle. Any suggestions on who to talk to? How do you do it with yours ?
For starters, I sorta cheat. I cycle with my wife and caregiver, and she helps me on and off! But I do have advice....

    WITH A CAREGIVER:
I use a gait belt to help with the transfer. I can get down on my trike okay with the help of gravity. To get off, I pivot so that my back is to my wheelchair. With a count of three and a heave-ho, Laura tugs up and I press up on my arms (one on the wheelchair, the other on the back rest of the cycle.

    SOLO:
This requires some equipment. I know some who have put in pully systems into their garages to get safely on and off. This is probably the most dependable method. Cheap? No. But exercise is so critical, the investment is worth it. That said, I've just started testing the IndeeLift (https://indeelift.com/). Picture a small dolly/miniature forklift. It can raise you anywhere from floor level (after a fall) to a seated height (e.g., wheelchair). I'll be trying it to see if it'll work with my trike!

Do others have any additional tips?
