  • Q: My cane does not offer enough support to walk outside. What next?

I got this question the other day from a member. -D

Your guide has inspired me to move more. I'm doing standing bodyweight exercises while I cook becuz I have a narrow kitchen so there's always a counter to grab if I get unbalanced. I want to start walking outside but transitioned to a walker right when we went into lockdown so not sure how. If I walked too long with my cane, previously, I got really sore shoulders and had some tendon issues in my wrists because I was leaning on the cane to compensate for strength loss. With no access to PT to help me with my walker, I'm wondering if you have any suggestions for me.

For a little more assistance, I'd usually recommend a sturdy pair of trekking poles, but since you also use a walker, I think you may need more support than that. To get outside, and enjoy nature, I'd look at two things.

    1) Forearm crutches. You'll be amazed at how much they help. But with your shoulder issues, I'd purchase an inexpensive pair to see if they work. And give it time to learn how to use them properly. I review them here: https://www.activemsers.org/forearm-crutches-guide

    2) Off-road walker. The Veloped is pretty trick. Check it out: https://www.trionic.us/en/veloped-th...-rollator-i-18
