  • Acquired scoliosis from neuro weakness

Hey all, I was wondering if any of you out there acquired scoliosis as a result of muscle weakness? My core and back are quite weak and don't strengthen much from PT. I now have pain in different parts of my back and my neuro got me referral to a neuro spinal guy. I have degeneration in different parts (probably from all the steroids). His focus was on whether my pain required surgical intervention or not. I use a soft strongly reinforced regular girdle on days my back feels quite weak. Dr. thankfully didn 't think surgery is option right now, but had little to say about the fact I lost almost 2 inches in height since diag. with MS. I searched on line for soft girdles made to support people with weak backs/core and came across the term "acquired scoliosis". But i wasn't able to locate a dr who specifically treated acquired scoliosis in adults. I thought that was strange. I'm unsure if the medical community considers it a real problem and if I'm stuck making my own home grown back support?! Interestingly, articles I came across explained that changing the curvature on the spine from neuro weakness can put a lot of stress on the hipflexors/ abductors and cause significant hip pain. I have tremendous hip pain too! Any ideas?

I forgot to mention that since diag. I acquired a visible deep small curve in lower back.

      Hips, Backs, and Strength

I also have weakness in my back and hips.
My L hip was so weak last February, that I couldn't even do the PT. I had to start water therapy for 2 weeks before being able to do the land therapy.

Long story short - the water therapy was great, and at the suggestion of the PT, I joined a YMCA that has a therapy pool. I'm not a swimmer, but I take some of the aqua classes and do my own exercises in the pool. It has strengthened my back and hips tremendously. I can ride a bicycle again.

Gotta keep moving. Best of Luck to you.
